Organized by the Maryland/Washington DC/West Virginia Region of Studio Art Quilt Associates and including art by members of SAQA’s North Carolina/Virginia and Pennsylvania Regions, the Purpose-Repurpose exhibition demonstrates how SAQA fiber artists continue the rich tradition of incorporating elements that would otherwise be discarded, turning them into compelling compositions.

These artists use their scraps to create new work; they repurpose clothing and other textiles; they cut up and re-imagine their quilts.

As Paula Kovarik, the exhibition’s juror, writes: “I’ve been thinking about how pieces linger in the studio. Repurposing them gives them new life
and me a new challenge.”

The word purpose implies intention. Re-purpose brings transition into focus. These artists show us how they purpose-repurpose their works of art.
